Cabeza de Vaca Painted Portrait

Cabeza de Vaca reported, "...we traversed the whole country to the South Sea," meaning from Florida to the Gulf of California along Northwestern Mexico. Once down the route of today's Mexico Highway 15 from Nogales to Mexico City in 1536, his pronouncement that North America "was the richest land in the world" surprised everyone. In 1541 both Vasquez de Coronado and Hernando de Soto explored deep into North America at places directly above the Houston Area, where visiting native Caddoans had told Vaca about America's richest land. He would never return, but his affect on those who did is beyond doubt.
