Notice that the LINES on the maps above, which begin at Havana, Cuba, where DeSoto started his North American Conquest, run up the Mississippi River and across Lake Michigan, which DeSoto first thought was Balboa's South Sea, to China. Europeans needed a NEW trade route to China to avoid the high tariffed Portuguese seaways around Africa. France and England continued their search for that passage long after DeSoto discovered that Lake Michigan was landlocked, not part of any sea.
