Advanced Caddoan Indians convinced him that "the richest land in the world" was NORTH of there (in Caddoan country). Shortly after being briefed by Cabeza de Vaca, both Vasquez de Coronado and Hernando de Soto searched for riches NORTH of Houston. Both would be disappointed there and alter course for home. Spain would never return for another look deep inside America, leaving it for French and English exploration and colonization. Cabeza de Vaca left Houston westbound for Mexico City, well away from his seven year habitat along the Gulf of Mexico.
